Health / Stem Cells

They are unique cells, turn into any specific cells, as the body needs them.

Sources of origination of stem cells
1. Adult body tissues 2. Embryos/ Embryonic stem cells
Supply new cells as an organism grows and to replace cells that get damaged. supply new cells for an embryo as it grows and develops into a baby
Said to be multipotent , which means they can only change into some cells in the body, not any cell. Said to be pluripotent, which means they can change into any cell in the body.

The research on stem cells has shown that it can be present inside different types of tissues ( the brain , bone marrow, blood and blood vessels , skeletal muscles , skin , liver).

Types of Stem Cells:
Totipotent means they can only change into some cells in the body, not any cell.
Pluripotent means they can change into any cell in the body
Multipotent They  differ closely related family of cells. Adult hematopoietic stem cells, for example, can become red and white blood cells or platelets.
Oligopotent They differ into a few different cell types. Adult lymphoid or myeloid stem cells can do this.
Unipotent These can only produce cells of one kind and renew them. Examples are adult muscle stem cells.

Uses
They can regenerate damaged tissue, under the right conditions.

Future Use
Used to replace cells & tissues that have been damaged or lost due to disease.
